BCYE Agar (Buffered Charcoal Yeast Extract Agar) is was developed for selective cultivation of Legionella species.
BCYE Agar is an enrichment medium which is used for the isolation and cultivation of Legionella species from both clinical and environmental sources. It is routinely used to screen air and water samples for contamination with Legionella bacteria
BCYE agar provides L-Cysteine and other nutrients required for the growth of Legionella pneumophila, the causative agents of Legionnaires’ disease.
Tip. Legionella spp. require the addition of L-cysteine for growth. BCYE without Cysteine is used in conjunction with traditional BCYE agar medium. Organisms that fail to grow on BCYE agar without Cysteine but grow on traditional BCYE agar can be presumptively identified as Legionella spp.
